PHPNuke Administration

  Post an Article

So you have a PHPNuke site and want to add an article. This will explain how to post an article on the home page of your site.

These instructions were written using PHPNuke version 7.1 as an example, so if you are using a different version of Nuke, you might see some minor variations in what is written here and what you are seeing, but they will be more or less the same.

If you're brand-new to Nuke or websites in general, make sure you read our Introduction to PHPNuke. We have also compiled a list of some of the best PHPNuke resources on the net, this is a great place to get started learning more about your Nuke site.

Most Nuke sites are installed with the "News" module in the home page. This means that if you submit an article, or if one of your visitors submit an article and you approve it, it will be displayed on the home page.

I suggest posting announcements about your site, or other current event-type stories as articles. Other long-term content should usually be placed in the "Content" module.

First go to your admin page. If you are already logged in as admin, you could just click on "Administration" on the "Administration" menu. If you're not logged in yet, go to www.your-site/admin.php and log in with your username and password. Once logged in you should be directed to your admin menu.

Click the "Add Story" icon. Now scroll down a little until you see the "Title" field. Simply place the title you want to use here.

Next, select the Topic you want the article to be placed under. If you have not set up any topics yet, you can do this back on the admin menu, click on the "Topics" icon. After you have selected the topic you may also select "Associated Topics". Just check the box of other topics that are also related to your article. It is OK if you do not select any "Associated Topics".

Next, select a "Category". If you have set up other categories, you can select them here. There is an "Article" category entered by default by Nuke. Until you understand more about what these categories are for, just select "Articles". Next select whether or not you want this article published in home. You most likely do (you have to until you have established more categories) so make sure that "Yes" is selected.

The next option you come to is whether or not you want to activate comments for this story. If you choose "yes" people will be able to leave their own comments about your story. Selecting "no" will prevent this from being available.

Submitting a Story with PHPNukeNow you will see a "Story Text" field. Whatever you enter in this field will be visible on the home page, so if your story is long and you don't want your home page to be too long, you may only want to enter the first paragraph or so of your article here. If it is a short story or if you don't mind your home page being lengthened so much, it is OK to enter the whole story. You can use some HTML here. Things like bold, italics, paragraphs, and hyperlinks are allowed. If you don't know any HTML, check out our guide to basic HTML. This isn't like using MS Word where if you hit "Enter" there will be a space between your paragraphs and hyperlinks are created automatically, if you don't use any html, your story will be a big "blob".

The next field you'll come to is the "Extended Text" field. This is for entering the rest of the story if you did not put it all in the field above it. If you use this field, when the story is published there will be a link that says "Read More..." under the text you entered above. Users can click the link to be taken to a page with the whole story. You can use the same basic HTML allowed in the field above

You'll now see a question asking if you want to "program" the story. This is if you want to delay the posting of the story. If you are going on vacation but want a message posted while you're gone, this is how to do it. If you want to post it now, make sure "No" is selected and skip down to the paragraph below this. If you do want to delay it being posted until later, select "yes". Below pick the date and time you want the the story to be posted. The time is selected using the 24 hour clock.

Next, you will come to a drop-down box that says "Preview Story". Select "OK". You will then be shown what your story will look like when published. Check for any errors, scroll down to make any changes, then at the bottom in the drop-down menu next to OK select "Preview Story" again if you made any changes, or "Post Story" if you're happy with it.

You can now go to your PHP Nuke home page to see how it looks.

Your visitors will also be able to submit stories by clicking on the "Submit News" link in the Modules menu. You will need to activate these articles after they have been submitted before they are posted on your website. You'll know an article has been submitted by looking at the "Waiting Content" menu on the left. If a story has been submitted by one of your visitors, you'll see it next to "Submissions" on this menu.

To authorize a story submitted by one of your visitors, just click on "Submissions" in the "Waiting Content" menu. Then using the same options listed above you can modify it, preview it, delete it, or post it.
